Originating in Heian-kyoto over 1200 years ago, Nishijin weaving is known for its highly-decorative and finely-woven designs, created through the use of tedious and specialised production processes. 

 

Kamigyo ward and Kita ward cover this area of Kyoto today, but this area is called Nishijin. Initial production of Nishijin brocade began all the way back during the Kofun period (250-538AD). However the fabric was only named Nishijin ori during the 15th century after a major civil war. With the war over, textile craftsmen who had fled the area were able to go back to Nishijin and resume production of Nishijin brocade. 

 

Therefore, the fabric was named Nishijin ori, which means western military encampment brocade, after the area where it had revived its production. Nishijin and Nishijin ori are registered trademarks in order to preserve the traditional process.

Obi function was to simply wrap around the kimono wearer’s waist three or four times only to keep the kimono in place to being the most important kimono accessory. They come in varied style from woven to dyed, single color to beautiful multiple colored works of textile art.

 

Obi are categorised by their design, formality, material, and use, and can be made of a number of types of fabric, with heavy brocade weaves worn for formal occasions, and some lightweight silk obi worn for informal occasions.
