In ancient Japan, historic hemp was the most valuable and abundant crop in the country. The ability to turn hemp into fabric made it highly valuable. At Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, certain objects are symbolically made from hemp, like noren, a short curtain that hangs over the doorways and brushes the top of the head as one enters the room, must be hempen.

 

This textile can be used as a noren, room divider, scroll, table runner, window valance.
