★ Unique vintage japanese muslin wool fabric - YUZEN - ASANOHA MON ★
Asanoha is one of the most popular traditional patterns often seen on Japanese kimono.
Asa = hemp: no = of: ha = leaf.
Using the method of yuzen, which means ‘pouring dye’, artisans outline designs with special glues and then pour dye onto the cloth. The dye bleeds through the fabric, so multiple layers of cloth can be produced with the same design.
When asanoha shape is repeated horizontally and diagonally, the pattern is called “asanoha tsunagi”. After the pattern became popular among women in the Edo period, it became widely used on clothes for newborn babies and children’s underwear.
Because hemp grows straight up towards the sky, the pattern was often used on children’s garments to express wishes for their healthy growth. It was a custom for parents to dress their newborn babies in asanoha patterned clothes.
